Band history highlights: June 1965 (11 years old): "The NightRiders"-2nd place winners of 'Battle of the Bands" sponsored by Kam Drive-in Theater Swap Meet. Roy Takemoto(bass), Peter Magallones (rhythm guitar),Roderick Perez (drums), Mark Denny (tambourine, vocals) Charles (lead guitar , vocals) March 1966- '"The NightRiders"- TV appearance on KHON-TV's Filipino Fiesta Variety Show. The band was introduced as the youngest rock band in Hawai'i at the time. 1969- Blues power trio with Tim Hurley (bass) and Clifton Kauwe (drums) and Charles on guitar and vocals. Played tunes from Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Credence Clearwater Revival, etc. 1970- "Brasilia"- Played covers of the "Tijuana Brass". Jon Lorance,, Walter Joaquin (trumpets); Terence (?), Steven Catania (trombones), Clifton Kauwe (drums), Tim Hurley (bass), Charles (guitar) Charles writes the songs "Forest" 1970-71- Leilehua Wind Ensemble (Played tuba) Charles writes the song "Kanakanova" in slack key 1972- Leilehua Singers and Madrigals (Sang baritone); "Outstanding Choir Member" award 1973- Formed "Summer" with Ron Yuen, Tim Hurley and Russell Fujioka..The band played the college circuit and private parties 1974- "Summer": First union gig at the Imperial Hawai'i Hotel in Waikiki at 'The Sundowner', a rooftop lounge. 1975- "Summer" : Played an open mic Saturday at the 'Toppe Ada Shoppe' and subsequently offered headlining gig at 'The Country Meating' in Wahiawa, Summer's hometown. -In concert with Kalapana and England Dan & John Ford Coley at UH Andrews Amphitheater. -In concert with Kalapana at the Waikiki Shell. Sold out, 10,000 in attendance -Filled in as headliners at Toppe Ada Shoppe when Kalapana went to the West Coast to record first album. -in concert with Average White Band at the Blaisdell Arena 1976- "Summer" in concert with Kalapana at the Roxy Theater, Los Angeles -Summer records debut album "Summer In Malibu" with DJ Pratt producing and Lew Mark engineering.. -"Summer In Malibu" # 2 on the overall Hawai'i album charts with heavy radio airplay, "Forest" and "Understanding To The Man" are hits. -In concert with Kalapana at Lahaina Amphitheater. -second concert with Kalapana at Waikiki Shell 1977- "Summer" :in concert at Aloha Stadium with Kalapana and Cecilio & Kapono.. 35,000 in attendance, history-making. -second West Coast tour with Kalapana. Intenttions to record Summer's second album. It was never done. The band found out the day before scheduled sessions were to take place. - in concert with Kalapana at- Berkeley Community Center,; UCLA' Royce Hall -in concert with John Lee Hooker at the Keystone Clubs in Palo Alto and Berkeley, CA -showcase concerts in Los Angeles, Tucson and Spokane. - Charles leaves the band before Japan tour to raise family 1984- Charles moves family to Big Island and joins the Kona Village Resort Luau Show as guitarist, bassist and vocalist. Would remain with show for 26 years. 1985- Charles builds first recording studio in a coffee shack in Kealakekua. -Forms "Pahoehoe" with Kevin Teves and begins recording "First Flow" 1986- Charles goes to Springfield, MO to lay tracks for original "NightRider" member Mark Denny with musicians from the Ozark Mountain Daredevils of "Jackie Blue" fame. 1988- Pahoehoe completes and releases "First Flow" 1991- Charles forms "Pacific Ocean Players" with Randy Lorenzo, Steve Toma, Jim Summey and Kevin Teves- releases 4 song cassette, "Acoustic Christmas" - Charles builds second recording studio in Kamuela .......to be contnued
